Chudleigh
Chudleigh is steeped in history, dating back to Saxon times when it was an agricultural village. Around 1300 the woollen cloth industry became the principal employer for some 500 years until, in 1807, two thirds of the town was destroyed by a fire which started in the bakery and rapidly spread through the mainly thatched properties. Within four years the town was rebuilt and the majority of the properties in the centre of Chudleigh date back to that period. For many years a traditional market town, Chudleigh still retains the charm and character of a bustling community with a good selection of shops and amenities, together with local groups catering for a wide variety of hobbies and interests.
Only ten miles from Exeter and a similar distance from the market town of Newton Abbot, Chudleigh is ideally located for easy access to the A38 and M5 motorway, whilst the resorts of Teignmouth and Dawlish, the Teign and Exe estuaries and the splendours of Dartmoor are all within a few miles. The area is a popular location for leisure pursuits and opportunities are plentiful for golf, fishing, walking, horse riding, sailing, bird watching, rock climbing and caving.
